Description:
Paul O'Montis (né Paul Wendel 1894, in Budapest); died 17. Juli 1940 in Konzentrazionslager Sachsenhausen. He was a German singer, parodist and cabaret performer strongly referred to his Jewish origin. As a young man he left Budapest for Hannover, and then -- Berlin. Around 1925 he became a figure in the revues and in the recording business, performing (often with the piano accompaniament by his Polish friend, a composer Mischa Spoliansky) all trendy schlagers of Berlin of the 1920s.: „In der Bar zum Krokodil" (1928, Text: Fritz Löhner-Beda), „Ich bin verrückt nach Hilde" (1929) or „Mein Bruder macht im Tonfilm die Geräusche" (1930). When the Nazis took power in 1933, he fled to Wien, where he stayed as long as the Anschluss Österreichs came in 1938, and then -- in 1939, to Prague, where -- as soon as the Nazis invaded Czech Republic -- he was arrested and sent to the Konzentrationslager Sachsenhausen. It did not take long, when he - as a Jew, and the international gay star - was murdered there. The witnesses of his last days all agree how full of dignity & pride was his behavior before his death, during all possible acts of humilation from his nazi persecutors. /nRecording: Paul O'Montis - Was hast Du für Gefühle, Moritz?
