Elmer Feldkamp The Hour Of Parting (Die Blaue Stunde) (L'Heure Bleu) From 1928 revue "Es liegt in der Luft" (It's In The Air) (Composed by Mischa Spoliansky), Victor 1929/nNOTE: Mischa SPOLIANSKY (b. 1898 in Białystok, Poland d. 1985, London) was a Polish-Jewish composer, long resident in Berlin and United Kingdom. His father was an opera singer and his sister would later become a pianist and his brother a cellist. After the birth of Mischa the family moved to Warsaw, and later to Kalisz. When Mischa was a boy, after the early death of his mother, the family moved to Vienna. Spoliansky's early musical education in piano, violin and cello was continued in Dresden under Prof. Mark Guensberg. At the age of ten Spoliansky made his public debut. Shortly thereafter his father died and Spoliansky moved to Królewiec (German name: Königsberg, then belonging to Prussia, now Kaliningrad in Russia)) where he had relatives. In 1914 when the Ist World War broke out, he travelled to Berlin, where his brother worked as a cellist. In Berlin, Spoliansky worked in a coffeehouse as a pianist and continued his musical education at the Stern'sches Konservatorium. In 1920s. Spoliansky's first compositions were played by the UFA-Filmtheaterorchester in Friedrichstraße. In addition he worked as a composer and pianist in a Russian émigré cabaret. There two popular composers Victor Hollaender and Werner Richard Heymann heard him and invited him to write and play for the literary cabaret "Schall und Rauch" in the basement of the Große Schauspielhaus, which Max Reinhardt had founded in 1919. Spoliansky set the texts of Kurt Tucholsky and accompanied stars such as Paul O'Montis, Rosa Valetti and Trude Hesterberg. Under the pseudonym „Arno Billing" he composed the melody for the first "homosexual anthem" called "Das lila Lied" (The Lavender Song): Wir sind nun einmal anders als die andern... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_a3UkF3aTI which he dedicated to Magnus Hirschfeld the pioneer of homosexual-rights-movement in Weimar Republic and director of the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft in Berlin. He married the dancer Elsbeth Reinwald in the same year. In 1925 Spoliansky accompanied Richard Tauber to the playing of Schuberts's "Winterreise". In his Revue "Es liegt in der Luft" (text by Marcellus Schiffer) in 1928 Marlene Dietrich performed. One year later she would be "discovered" in Spoliansky's "Zwei Krawatten" by Josef von Sternberg, who was searching for the leading actress for Der Blaue Engel. There followed in 1930 "Wie werde ich reich und glücklich?", in 1931 "Alles Schwindel", in 1932 "Rufen Sie Herrn Plim" and "Das Haus dazwischen", and in 1933 "100 Meter Glück". As soon as in Germany arrived the Nazionasozialismus regime, in 1933 Spoliansky emigrated to London, where he began a second career as a film composer. His naturalization as a British national succeeded in large part thanks to help of a wold famous Polish tenor Jan Kiepura, whose hit "Heute Nacht Oder Nie" (Tell Me Tonight) from the film "Das Lied einer Nacht" (1932) made Spoliansky world renowned. At this event, he made a recording of his own voice to send to Thomas Edison (who had the idea that the phonograph may be used in a way similar to the letter). His comments are made having heard various recordings played to him at the event. /nAlso, earlier in 1888, a press conference was played a recording of Sullivan's "The Lost Chord" (amongst others). This recording is thought to be the same recording, made in 1888, and is performed by anonymous artists on cornet and piano. While not all that interesting musically, the recording is of supreme historical interst as being the first properly listenable recording of music ever made. One musical observation I have is to note the restrained attitude towards rubato - the presumably British players don't seem to be indulging in the sometimes wayward rhythmic tos and fros of the Austro-German piano school in this recording. There is still a degree of non-sychronisation between cornet melody and piano accomaniment though, typical of the treatment of melody and accompaniment in piano solo recordings from a few years later./nAnyway, afterwards (the cylinder runs out before the work has been completed, and irritatingly just as it starts to rise to its climax) you hear Sullivan's voice from the other event. He is first introduced, and then makes the following speech - rather perspicacious all things considered!:/nDear Mr. Edison, if my friend Edmund Yates has been a little incoherent it is in consequence of the excellent dinner and good wines that he has drunk. Therefore I think you will excuse him. He has his lucid intervals. For myself, I can only say that I am astonished and somewhat terrified at the result of this evening's experiments: astonished at the wonderful power you have developed, and terrified at the thought that so much hideous and bad music may be put on record for ever.
